Last week, the International Maritime Institute of Nigeria (“IMION”) held a course titled “Innovative Strategies for Growing the Blue Economy” held from 02 December to 06 December 2024. Paul Usoro & Co, led by our Managing Partner, Mrs. Mfon Ekong Usoro, had the privilege of helping to organise and facilitate this event. The course brought together experts to explore sustainable growth strategies for the blue economy.
The course commenced on Monday 02 December 2024 with a warm welcome and registration of participants, followed by the arrival of distinguished guests, including the Director General of IMION. The opening session featured a safety briefing, a welcome address, and opening remarks, setting a positive tone for the week ahead.
The first module, “Introduction to the Blue Economy,” was presented by Prof. Iyiola Oni and Rear Admiral Francis Akpan (Rtd). This session provided a foundational understanding of the blue economy, its significance, and its potential for sustainable development. Following this, the second module on “Marine and Coastal Ecosystem Services,” led by Prof. Comfort Etok and Dr. Eugene Itua, focused on the critical services provided by marine and coastal ecosystems and their role in supporting economic activities.
On Tuesday, 03 December 2024, the course examined “Policy and Governance,” with insights from Mrs. Funke Agbor, SAN, and Prof. Samuel Dike. This module discussed the importance of robust policies and governance frameworks in fostering a sustainable blue economy. The afternoon session on “Economic and Environmental Sustainability,” presented by Dr. Eugene Itua, Prof. Samuel Dike, and Prof. Iyiola Oni, explored strategies to balance economic growth with environmental stewardship.
On 04 December 2024, these sessions highlighted “Technological Innovations in the Blue Economy,” with presentations by Prof. Iyiola Oni, Prof. Comfort Etok, and Associate Prof. Obugheni Arugu. This module showcased cutting-edge technologies driving the blue economy forward. Later, Prof. Freedom Onuoha led a session on “Stakeholder Engagement and Community Involvement,” emphasizing the importance of engaging local communities and stakeholders in blue economy initiatives.
Thursday, 05 December 2024 began with a continuation of the module on “Marine and Coastal Ecosystem Services,” presented by Rear Admiral Francis Akpan (Rtd). This was followed by a session featuring “Case Studies and Best Practices,” led by Associate Prof. Obugheni Arugu, which presented real-world examples and best practices in the blue economy.
The final day of the course featured a review session by Mrs. Mfon Ekong Usoro, the awarding of certificates, and a group photo to commemorate the event, led by Rear Admirat T.C. Udofia (Rtd).
The “Innovative Strategies for Growing the Blue Economy” course provided valuable insights and practical strategies for sustainable development. We are excited to apply the knowledge gained to our consulting work and contribute to the growth of the Institute.
